15-Minute Drama on BBC Radio 4

BBC Radio 4, 15-19 July 2013, BBC Radio 4 Extra 20 July 2013

Bill (Stephen Mangan) and Bella (Claire Skinner) regularly meet for lunch.  They are good friends, but not in love with each other, using the occasion of a regular monthly meeting to confess their innermost feelings about their personal lives.

The subjects vary, from films, domestic life, appointments at the hospital, Marcel Proust and education.  The rapport between the two protagonists is palpable; and Kahan has a gift for writing witty dialogue.  Sometimes the comparisons between the characters' lives and the films seem a little laboured, but we nonetheless understand how lunch, as a social occasion, provides the opportunity for people to share good food as well as expose their innermost selves.  The director was Sally Avens.
