Set in an unspecified time in the past, The Witch Hunter Chronicles has an eponymous hero Ludlov (Damien de Groot) telling the story of his experiences to Death (Niklaas Reinhold).  He is thrust into a maelstrom by his superiors' decision to kill all magically gifted people out of fear of a prophesied apocalyptic event. The task is not an easy one: doom is fast approach, and evil seems to be predominant in the world, but Ludlov is not someone to be cowed by the magnitude of the struggle ahead.  On the contrary, he strikes listeners as a determined soul, fully cognizant of his powers as a witch-hunter yet aware of his responsibilities both to himself and the world in general.  He has an insatiable thirst for revenge.

The quest-motif of the story is a familiar one; the medieval setting aligns The Witch Hunter Chronicles with literary classics of the past including Spenser's The Faerie Queene and Sidney's Arcadia.  However the aural style of Elene Hoskens' production is distinctly contemporary; the sound-effects are nicely understated, while the music (by Peter Van Riet) conjures up an atmosphere of foreboding, making us realize the difficulties that lie ahead for Ludlov.
