The Truth, 9 May 2013

A powerful piece about an Afghanistan war veteran (Christian Paluck) experiencing continual mental trauma; the voices in his head keep goading him into doing things that he does not want to (for example, committing suicide).  Unable to cope with the stresses of daily life, he spends much of his time sitting on his own; in a fast-paced world, where restaurant tables can only be held for a limited time (due to customer pressure), he is considered a burden.

However redemption is at hand - if only temporarily - as he finds solace in playing music.  He might not be very good, but it gives him a sense of purpose in life.

Directed by Jonathan Mitchell, You're Not Alone made astute use of radio drama's sonic potential.  With their repeated phrases delivered in incantatory tones, the voices impinged themselves on our minds, revealing the extent of the veteran's suffering.
