Lovely Jubilee
is a short play set in Cardiff at the time of the Queen's 60th year jubilee celebrations. Its basic scenario is
a Mapp and Lucia-like conflict between representatives of two tea rooms: The Tiger Bay Tea Rooms and Doylies with a
Diff, who compete in a bake-off organized by Radio Cardiff. The competition provokes a war on Twitter between members
of the two businesses, which starts off as friendly rivalry and ends up with full-scale vituperation. Eventually the dispute ends, when neither of them win the competition.
The bake-off is set outdoors, with the emcee
being a local personality from Radio Cardiff. Music is provided by Aretha Franklin.
Although only nine minutes long, Lovely Jubilee is an intriguing
little drama, the first in an ongoing series, involving memorable characters. I look forward to hearing more.
