Action Science Theatre, June 2012
This was the first podcast from a new group whose professed objective
is to combine action, science and theatre into an entertaining combination.
The story focused on Jane Grey (Sreya Rao), a Ph.D. student at an unnamed university,
who suddenly discovers that her thesis is being fast-tracked for submission and evaluation. She visits her professor,
Dodgson (Matt Kirk), whose answers are evasive, to say the least. Returning to her workstation, she finds that her research
has been stolen by a mysterious pair of goons, despite the efforts of her male sidekick Jasper (Dan Bond) to stop them.
Jane and Jasper resolve to find out what has happened, and end up by encountering
a gang whose leader (Rhona Wells) appears to have an innate phobia of mathematical formulae. The thesis is recovered
in a climactic ending, in which Jane and Jasper find a novel way to outwit the baddies.
With its roots in the kind of caper films and/or radio plays popular in
the 1930s and 1940s, Jane Grey: Action Mathematician proves diverting entertainment, even if the plot is a tad
far-fetched. However I applaud the efforts of everyone involved in their attempts to introduce a new twist on a
familiar theme. The producer was Dan Booth.
