Radio Drama at Ninety

BBC Radio 3, 15 February 2013, BBC Radio 4 Extra 16 February 2013

Produced to celebrate the ninetieth anniversary of the first broadcast of drama on BBC Radio, this short extract from Phyllida Lloyd's Donmar Warehouse revival with an all-female cast had Harriet Walter and Jenny Jules as Brutus and Cassius.

It would be unfair of me to comment on the production as a whole - as I have not seen it - but the extract confirmed how versatile Shakespeare can be; his plays can work with every type of cast, irrespective of context, gender or historical period.  The relationship between the characters came across loud and clear; how Brutus and Cassius were at once inseparable yet bitter rivals in the struggle for power in Rome.  The two performers were compelling, despite the brevity of the extract.

The extract was prefaced with a talk from the producer Jeremy Mortimer, recalling the origins of radio drama, and how it still continues to attract substantial audiences.  You can read more of his thoughts on the BBC blog: highly recommended http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/aboutthebbc/posts/BBC-Radio-Drama-at-90
