Comedy Punkz, August 2012
Another trawl through the highways
and byways of radio drama turned up this fan podcast based on Doctor Who. The story introduces a range of characters
- Jonathan (the Who geek), Tom, Cindy (promiscuous, narcissistic), Graham (a gay Australian), and Kate (always looking
for trouble). They are trying to save their local hostelry from closure by the brewery, and set out to find legendary
campaigner/ anarchist Mike Unt. The plot weaves its complicated way, incorporating a myriad of references to SF programmes
past and present, as well as to other celebrities and material found on British television.
Many of the references will mean little
to non-British listeners, but nonetheless there is plenty to admire about this production; the quickfire delivery, the rapid
switches of location and the use of atmospheric sound-effects. It has to be said that much of the material is at least
15-certificate in content, with an emphasis on double entendre worthy of the Carry On series at its best
(worst?).
Nonetheless
the company is likeable and talented, including Stuart Robinson, James Potter, Steve Johnson, Suzanne Bailey, Samantha Robinson
and Duncan Wilson. I hope to hear more about this troupe in the future.
