Afternoon Drama on BBC Radio 4

BBC Radio 4, 2 July 2013

Jason (Steven Camden) is a successful young teacher of English, living in a small flat with wife Jess (Riann Steele), and daughter.  Life seems set fair for him ... that is, until he re-encounters Riley (Alex Lanipekun), his one-time best friend from school.  Riley seems either unwilling or unable to go away, despite the fact that Jason doesn't really want him around, prompting Jason to reflect on his own shady past.

James Robinson's production neatly structures the action around Shakespeare's Othello, which Jason is currently studying with his learners in school.  The text becomes uncomfortably relevant to Jason - so much so, in fact, that he begins to confuse the action of Othello with his own life.   Jason has to rethink his life; rather than trying to suppress the shadier aspects of his past under a veneer of social and educational respectability, he has to confront them - for better or for worse.
