Audio Epics
This is the second production from Audio Epics I have listened to, and very entertaining it
proved. Domien de Groot's skilful postproduction of a piece by Eline Hoskens has depth and colour, creating the
illusion of a sinister world through the use of echo, plus clever positioning of the actors in front of the microphone.
This production well understands the concept of depth in audio drama; how closeness and distance from the recording device
not only helps to create suspense, but helps us to understand the relationship of one character to another.
The five-part tale traces the
progress from innocence to experience; a voyage of discovery in which a protagonist wants to find out more, and develops as
a result of acquiring knowledge, both factual as well as emotional. The basic framework is a familiar one (it can be
traced back to Little Red Riding Hood), but way in which dramatist De Groot tells it remains consistently entertaining.
I admired the performances of
the five-person cast, comprising Domien de Groot, Stephanie Cuyt, Niklaas Reinhold, Aron Bohdanowicz and Grace van Lysebetten.
