Encore Audio, 2009

A short, if somewhat melancholy piece about a tree (Carol Crossfield) which had stayed in its place for a century and half, but was about to be cut down by the older Gary (Hugh Simpson) and his young assistant Jed (John Davidson).  Jed was all for cutting the tree down as soon as possible, but Gary seemed more cautious - after all, he had played in trees like this when he had been a boy, and it seemed to him like cutting down the tree would resemble cutting off his past.

Inevitably, however, the decision was made to go ahead with chopping the tree down, and thereby depriving the landscape of life in favour of improving the transport system.  Gary volunteered to undertake the task with an axe, but found that the task was beyond him.  The tree certainly fell, but so did Gary.  We were left wondering what kind of memorial would be left in Gary's honour - a tree, perhaps?

Convincingly acted by the Encore Audio cast, Colin Lewisohn's production prompted us to think about what we might be doing to our environment in the name of "progress."
