BBC Radio 3, 25 December 2010
This Radio 3 compilation of sounds from different gramophone records,
all issued in the 1970s, proved something of a nostalgia trip. Structurally speaking it began with a slow prelude, reached
some kind of crescendo, and then finished quietly in its fifteen-minute duration. I’m not sure that it was meant to
mean much, but the experience of listening to long-forgotten sounds from my youth proved a pleasurable one. However I’m
not sure what those listeners with no experience of the 1970s – whether direct experience or the experience gained through
reading – might have got from the programme. But then perhaps they were not the kind of people the compiler Jonny
Trunk was aiming at.
