BBC Radio 4, 3 March 2008

Sebastian Baczkiewicz’s modern retelling of Ovid’s Zeus and Semele myth (Radio 4) employed a similar format, as the inquisitive paparazzo Harry Nicholson (Daniel Cerqueira) was sucked into a web of lies and deceit by Russian entrepreneur Karkov (Robert Glenister) and his wife Mariel (Lyndsey Marshal). Eventually Nicholson finds that he cannot escape: while capable of performing miracles such as walking on water, he is unable to live a life on his own any more. He has become the devil’s associate; the devil, in this case, being Karkov/Zeus. Karkov is guilty of the same folly, as he seeks to discover the unknowable about his wife Mariel/Semele and ultimately destroys himself. Jessica Dromgoole’s production offered a salutary lesson about the perils of knowledge: sometimes it is better to remain in splendid ignorance.
