BBC Radio 4, 10 March 2008

I have to say that I loved the radio revival of Dixon of Dock Green (10 March), based on Ted Willis’s original television scripts and rewritten by Sue Rodwell. The familiar theme music; the evocation of a society wherein everyone respects the bobby on the beat; criminals who willingly give themselves up rather than trying to escape; and nuclear families passing the time with chats over endless cups of tea. David Calder’s George Dixon did not attempt to supplant the memory of Jack Warner in the role; rather his voice conjured up the image of the bobby on the beat, sustaining law and order in a fundamentally logical world. David Tennant’s Andy Crawford proved an admirable foil. I shall certainly be listening to future episodes in this six-part series.
